Granite is an igneous
rock. Granite is much harder and durable than marble. It is
the earth's oldest building material, practically as old as
the earth itself. The molten core of the Earth, called Magma,
continues cooling over a period of time and regular seismic
activity forces veins of this solidified magma to the surface.
This solidification under extreme pressure makes this igneous
rock hard and dense.
Many varieties of granite exist, but they differ in color,
texture and crystalline structure, resulting in different
stones having different properties. Granites have three essential
minerals in common Feldspar, Quartz and Mica, which
are present in different proportions, giving each Granite
its own color, texture and structural characteristics. Many
other minerals also are present, including garnet, corundum,
magnetite, hematite, pyrite, hornblende, zircon, etc., all
of which add to the unique coloration and texture of each
granite deposit. Different deposits have different colors
and each stone differs from the next.
